Soapbox Holistics comes to West Philly Arts

Here at West Philly Arts, we have been kicking off the last four summers with a two-week arts camp. This year, our theme was Art and Science. We really explored this connection by creating scientific experiments, carefully observing the outcome and translating the results into an art or craft. We made scientific illustrations, studied the solar systems, drew from observation, created kaleidoscopes, zoetropes so much more. We also had some very special visitors on one of the last days of camp: the ladies of Soapbox Holistics who showed us how to make lip balm from scratch!

Soapbox Holistics is a locally owned company featuring hand made body products. They came prepared with some scientific facts about the natural ingredients they use such as cocoa butter, shea butter, almond oil and more. We really learned the importance of taking care of our skin while making delicious mint-chocolate lip balm. The lip balm was set in minutes and we were eager to try it out...but first, we got to design the labeling and the packaging by personalizing our lip balms into our very own product. The result was a true merger of science, art, and design!

We were really thankful to Christine and Sharleen for such a unique experience! For a listing of all their products, visit their online shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/SoapboxHolistic, and like them on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/soapboxbody.

Pictures from the Winter 2012 Art Show!

Our winter art show was a big success filled with art, food, and good times! This time, we combined some of the projects from the crafts class and the painting classes into a festive arrangement: Origami and painted glass ornaments hung along side the artworks in a holiday display!

Among other works showcased were these small, but intricate egg tempera works in the style of the Canadian artist Emily Carr. Egg tempera lends itself well to producing small brush marks, which we used to create movement and distance.

Lastly, we learned about cubism and made works inspired by contemporary artists working in that style. We used Nupastels, which are higher in pigment than regular pastels.

Currently, During the Spring I session, we are working on adding 3-dimensional elements to our paintings. We are also working on a large scale superhero mural. Stay tuned for more pictures and announcements about our Spring II session and Summer Camp!

A Look at our Painting Classes

The summer is coming to an end and the school year is right around the corner. Above are some highlights from our painting class during the 2012 Summer Arts Camp. We currently have two groups in drawing and painting, our youngest artists, grade K-2, and rising artists in grades 3-5.

The above ice scream cone was painted by one of our rising artists, who used oil paint for the first time this summer. We recycled old vinyl wallpaper and created still life paintings against a wallpaper pattern.

Below this almost ready-to-eat ice cream cone is a "Cave Painting" created by one of our youngest artists. They made their own paint using earth pigments and egg yolk and depicted subjects reminiscent of early cave art: animals in motion, plants, and insects.

Enrollment is now open for our After School Painting Classes. The youngest group will be meeting on Tuesdays from 4-5:30pm, and the rising artists group will meet on Thursdays from 4-5:30pm. This fall, we are also offering an open painting class for grades 3-6 for those students that already have a busy after school schedule that will run on Saturday morning from 10:30am-noon.

The painting class covers most drawing and painting techniques such as pastels, watercolors, gouache, egg tempera, acrylic painting on canvas and more. Once or twice per session, we'll have a special workshop such mono prints, painted collages, Chinese brush painting, and other variations on drawing and painting.
